For decades, caregivers from abroad have played an invaluable role in supporting families in Canada. Realizing their enormous sacrifices, Canada instead offered them the opportunity to obtain the right to permanent residence.
On behalf of the Honorable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Members of Parliament Salma Zahid and Rechi Valdez today announced that the length of work in Canada required to obtain the right to permanent residence is reduced from 24 to 12 months. In addition, some places in existing programs for caregivers are reserved for those who already have work experience in Canada with a previous work permit so that they can apply for a permanent residence permit. The changes will take effect from April 30, 2023 and will work for those who have already submitted an application.
As a result, caregivers and their families will be able to obtain a permanent residence permit faster and successfully settle in Canada.
The criteria change is intended for applicants from the Home Child Care Provider (HCCP) and Home Support Worker (HSW) pilot projects, including those whose applications have already been received by the IRCC, and potential applicants for the remaining five years of pilot projects.
